New Puppy Checklist: Your First Year Guide

Congratulations on your new puppy\! The first year is exciting, full of firsts, and crucial for setting up a lifetime of good health. Here’s what your puppy needs in their first year at Frisco Petcare.

First Vet Visit (8 Weeks)

Your puppy should see a vet within the first week of coming home. We’ll do a thorough physical exam, start vaccinations, begin deworming, and discuss nutrition, training, and socialization. This is also a great time to ask all your new puppy questions.

Vaccination Schedule

Puppies need a series of vaccinations to build immunity:

  • 6-8 weeks: DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza) — first round
  • 10-12 weeks: DHPP booster, Bordetella
  • 14-16 weeks: DHPP final booster, Rabies
  • 12-16 weeks: Leptospirosis, Canine Influenza (based on lifestyle)

Spay/Neuter

We typically recommend spaying or neutering between 6-9 months of age, though the ideal timing can vary by breed and size. We’ll discuss the best timing for your specific puppy.

Parasite Prevention

Start flea, tick, and heartworm prevention early. In Texas, parasites are a year-round concern. We’ll recommend the right products for your puppy’s age and weight.

Microchipping

A microchip is permanent identification that significantly increases the chances of being reunited if your pet ever gets lost. We can microchip your puppy during any visit.
