Summer Safety Tips: Keeping Your Pet Cool in Texas Heat
Texas summers are no joke, and the heat can be dangerous for our four-legged friends. Here’s how to keep your pets safe and comfortable when temperatures soar.
Never Leave Pets in Parked Cars
Even with windows cracked, car temperatures can reach deadly levels in minutes. On a 90-degree day, the inside of a car can hit 120 degrees in just 10 minutes. Always take your pet with you or leave them at home.
Adjust Walk Times
Walk your dog early in the morning or after sunset when pavement is cooler. Hot asphalt can burn paw pads — if it’s too hot for your bare hand, it’s too hot for their paws.
Provide Plenty of Water
Keep fresh, cool water available at all times, both indoors and out. Consider adding ice cubes to their bowl on especially hot days. Bring water on walks.
Know the Signs of Heatstroke
Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, and bright red gums are all signs of heatstroke. If you suspect heatstroke, move your pet to a cool area, offer water, and contact us immediately.
