5 Signs Your Pet Needs a Dental Checkup

Dental health is one of the most overlooked aspects of pet care. By the time your pet shows obvious signs of dental pain, the problem may already be advanced. Here are five warning signs every pet parent should watch for.

1. Bad Breath

While pet breath is never minty fresh, persistently foul breath can indicate bacterial buildup, infection, or decaying teeth. If your pet’s breath has gotten noticeably worse, it’s time for a dental exam.

2. Difficulty Eating

If your pet is dropping food, chewing on one side, or showing less interest in hard kibble, dental pain could be the cause. Some pets will stop eating altogether when tooth pain becomes severe.

3. Red or Swollen Gums

Healthy gums should be pink and firm. Red, swollen, or bleeding gums are signs of gingivitis, which can progress to periodontal disease if left untreated.

4. Excessive Drooling

While some breeds naturally drool more than others, a sudden increase in drooling can signal oral pain or a foreign object stuck in the mouth.

5. Pawing at the Mouth

If your pet is frequently pawing at their mouth or rubbing their face against furniture, they may be trying to alleviate dental discomfort.

Regular dental checkups can catch these issues early. At Frisco Petcare, we recommend annual dental exams for all pets. Schedule a dental checkup today.
